There are multiple reasons that your wisdom tooth may need to be removed. Third molars are the last teeth to erupt. By the time wisdom teeth are ready to emerge, there often is not sufficient space in the jaw for the teeth to fully erupt. When a tooth cannot fully emerge, it is impacted.

Impacted teeth are more susceptible to decay, infections, and other dental problems. Wisdom teeth are often the cause of dental crowding. If one or more of your wisdom teeth are pushing nearby teeth, you may need to have the third molars extracted.

Wisdom teeth are more difficult to properly clean. This is one reason why third molars are more susceptible to tooth decay. If your wisdom tooth is causing oral pain due to advanced decay, removal is often advised. Gum disease, cysts, and oral pain are also common reasons that a wisdom tooth may need to be removed.

How Will My Wisdom Tooth Be Removed?

If your wisdom tooth pain is the result of a serious injury, seek immediate medical attention by calling 911. Have someone drive you if you are in pain.

If you are in severe pain or experiencing bleeding that will not stop on its own, your situation will be treated as a dental emergency. Our office will promptly attend to your emergency. One of Dr. Wilderman’s first priorities will be managing your pain.

Our dental practice offers an advanced anesthesia delivery system called the Wand®. The pen delivers anesthetic slowly without the need for painful injections. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Wilderman will make one or more incisions around the wisdom tooth if needed. Third molars are sometimes broken into smaller parts so they can be removed without damaging surrounding soft tissue.

Once your wisdom tooth has been removed, gauze will be used to control bleeding. Most patients are able to resume basic activities after a few days. Full recovery usually takes seven to 10 days.
