Tips for Preventing Root Canal Infections

A root canal infection occurs when the dental pulp inside of a tooth becomes infected by oral bacteria. This bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth and is responsible for bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. When a tooth is seriously decayed or injured, the bacteria can access the pulp and cause major harm. Thankfully root canal treatment (endodontics) can get the infection under control.

With smart oral hygiene practices and sound preventative care, root canal infections can be avoided. Proper preventative care is part of our philosophy at our Philadelphia dental practice. These tips below should help you keep your smile healthy and clean for years and years to come, and prevent the need for a root canal.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

One of the keys to having a healthy smile is regular brushing and flossing. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and to floss at least once a night. You should also consider using an antiseptic mouthwash when you brush and floss to eliminate oral bacteria and get your mouth extra-fresh. A non-alcoholic mouthwash is most ideal.

Avoid Using Tobacco Products

Smoking cigarettes and using chewing tobacco can result in many health issues, from lung disease and heart disease to developing cancer. Tobacco products can also affect the health of your gums and leave your teeth more susceptible to damage. To improve your overall health and wellness, consider quitting for good.

Wear Mouth Protection During Sports

If you play sports, you might suffer an injury to your mouth or face. That doesn't just happen in combat sports or contact sports either. People who play basketball and soccer may get struck in the face or suffer a nasty fall that leads to dental injury. To protect your mouth from trauma and prevent root canal infections, be sure to wear a mouth guard when playing sports. It can make a lot of difference.

Wear Head/Face Protection During Applicable Activities

Helmets and face protection can save lives and protect your smile whether you're at an industrial job, riding your bike, or driving a motorcycle. To keep yourself as safe as possible, be sure to wear head and/or face protection during applicable activities. Better to be safe than sorry.

Avoid Chewing on Inedible Objects

Chewing on drinking straws, pen caps, and other inedible objects can lead to chips and cracks on the teeth. The same goes for chomping on ice cubes and using your teeth to open packages. Avoid these bad habits to protect your teeth from harm and potential root canal infection.

Stay Hydrated with Water

Dry mouth is more than just an annoyance. If you suffer from frequent and chronic dry mouth, you might be at greater risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Drink water throughout the day to quench your thirst and to keep your mouth moist and healthy.

Visit Your Dentist for Regular Checkups

Simply visiting your dentist twice a year can prevent the need for a root canal. Minor cavities or more serious levels of tooth decay can be addressed promptly, preventing oral bacteria from reaching the pulp inside of the tooth. Checkups and cleanings will make you smile healthy for years and years to come.
