Dr. Wilderman: I've been using tooth-colored fillings for over 30 years. Tooth-colored fillings generally fall into two categories. First is composite, or plastic fillings. They're great for small restorations and back teeth, fixing cavities in front teeth, or sometimes even veneering front teeth. The advantage of tooth-colored plastic composite fillings is that it can be accomplished in one visit, and the cost is generally fairly low.
The other category is porcelain restorations. Porcelain restorations used in back teeth can be crowns, but they can also be large restorations or fillings in back teeth, where you need maximum strength. Porcelain restorations in the front can be used for veneers as well. The disadvantage of the porcelain is it costs a little bit more money and it does take two visits. But porcelain has a natural translucency that mimics natural enamel and you just get an absolutely beautiful, life-like restoration from porcelain.
